The article is devoted to the analysis of the teaching of SVT. Firmilian of Caesarea about the Apostolic succession contained in his Epistle to SVMC. Cyprian of Carthage (256). The creation of this text was caused by disagreements on the need to baptize heretics who converted to the Catholic faith. If SVT. Firmilian and SVMC. Cyprian considered heretical baptisms invalid, then Bishop Stephen of Rome, citing local Roman tradition supposedly Dating back to the apostles, as well as his authority as the successor of AP. Peter, insisted on a General rejection of the practice of re-baptizing heretics. As part of the dispute, questions were raised regarding the status of the AP. Peter as the Foundation of Church unity, the succession of Apostolic witness in local churches and the hierarchy of authority between Them, as well as the transmission of the power to absolve sins from the apostles to the bishops. As the author tried to show, SVT. Firmilian largely takes a universalist ecclesiology SVMC. Cyprian, however, supplemented his argument with theses based on an earlier local-historical interpretation of the Apostolic succession, characteristic of Egesippus, St. Irenaeus of Lyons, and Tertullian. In particular, he contrasts the Roman tradition with the authority of the Church of Jerusalem and claims the Apostolic origin of the customs of the Church of Caesarea. A prominent place in the message of SVT. Firmilian is also interested in the controversy against the Montanists. Special emphasis is placed on the transfer of Episcopal authority through ordination in the theology of the Holy see. Firmiliana anticipates the formation of a system of ecclesiastical provinces in the East, within which the control of Episcopal offices is concentrated in the hands of the Metropolitan. Under this system of Church organization, Apostolic succession begins to be seen not as something belonging to the local Church, but as a gift given to it from outside by the Episcopal College. The ecclesiological problem of disputes about the baptism of heretics seems relevant in the light of the current crisis in relations between local Orthodox churches.
